A system in the Saedran Sub-sector

System gazetteer:

The Kessarine system is a small planetary system of 5 worlds orbiting a slightly larger than Sol orange-yellow star. Kessarine is an inhabited system under the auspices of the Administratum of Holy Terra.

Kessarine I A Delta class dead world, a boiling rock with no atmosphere and a surface temperature that melts lead. No practical worth to the Imperium. 3 moons.

Kessarine II A Gamma class civilised world, a large rocky world with extensive desertification owing to climatic changes because of progression along the main sequence in the local sun. Arable land limited to the formerly ice capped poles. 14 Moons orbiting with extensive Imperial facilities colonising them. Usually referred to as just "Kessarine".

Kessarine III A Rho class dead world with some mining facilities operating in climate domes. A mid-size planet with an argon atmosphere with traces of carbon dioxide indication former geological activity or life, now extinct. Single moon.

Kessarine IV Gas Giant. Host to a herd of some 47 moons. Most are tiny rocks, better classified as asteroids captured by the giant. Frequent clearance operations by the navy required to keep down pirate activity as the moons are a perfect host for small dock facilities.

Kessarine V A frozen ball of ice-wrapped rock, cold enough to be covered in methane snow. Would be of no interest to the Imperium without the need for water resources to help Kessarine II's ecosystem stabilise. Water resources mined by penal labour estimated to be at approximately 65% remaining.

Imperial Presence in Kessarine:

With Kessarine II (henceforth referred to only as 'Kessarine'), is the major seat of Imperial presence in the system. Originally colonised as a garden world from a diaspora fleet that began in the Indus hives, the changes in climate were brutal and caused the collapse of colonial civilisation into suspicious bands of desert nomads. With the glorious reintegration of Kessarine into the burgeoning Imperium, the Mechanicus were able to properly survey the planet and recognise that the poles were now both viable and verdant. A brief war against the tribes that had colonised the poles left the Imperium in charge of the major sources of food on the planet and compliance quickly followed. The poles were ringed with cities to hold the increasing off world presence and those cities were eventually linked with defensive walls to protect Kessarine's most precious resource. These fortress cities - really proto-hives spread over a large area - are the main population centres of Kessarine.

Kessarine would be an unremarkable world clinging to existence were it not for the remarkable abundance of mineral and rare earth wealth in its sands. Particularly in vital precursors to fyceline explosives and the export of minerals and the manufacture of bolt ammunition are thus Kessarine's primary exports. The harsh conditions in the deep desert meant that mining operations were always at risk of collapse or assault from the roving bands of heretek tribesmen left over from Kessarine's colonial past. Thus, the Crawler Cities were developed. Self-sustaining - if Spartan - population centres that grind along on thousands of hydraulic lifting legs at a rate of 4-5 miles a year. The cities are as deep as the sands themselves and stand upon the living rock of Kessarine. The leading face is a mass of airlocks and mineral chutes that allow intense mining of the entire thickness of the sands. The deposits behind the cities are nothing but polluted crystal silicon dust. Hundreds of these cities crawl across Kessarine and make the majority of wealth that the world produces.

Kessarine Culture:

The Kessarine are a people torn between the comforts of the poles and the lure of the deep desert. The sands are in their bones and there are few born Kessarine that do not undertake regular expeditions into the deserts. Excuses for these expeditions vary, sometimes hunting, sometimes pacifying the heretek tribes, sometimes researching the geology, ofttimes looking for evidence of what happened to a previous expedition. Whatever the justification, the reason is really that the Kessarine only feel spiritually whole when they are in the deep desert. Able to see the stars under clear skies with only moonlight to guide them. It is a much-romanticised version of their former lives.

As with many Imperial cultures with little previous architectural wealth, religion on Kessarine tends toward the "gather around a portable shrine" model rather than massive cathedrals or chapels. The Kessarine worship the Emperor in His guise as the Sun. Solar worship was the norm on Kessarine and was simply replaced with the Emperor as godhead as a practical matter by the Ecclesiarchy. More formal worship is growing in popularity on Kessarine but the old ways are overwhelmingly the favourite. The Kessarine time most of their rituals to the sun. They name their children in dawn's light and burn their dead at the setting of the sun. Kessarine priests use yellow extensively as a signifier of their status.

The Kessarine are a careful, polite people with extensive rituals of greeting and parting. These hyper ritualised exchanges are common among nomadic peoples who have to be careful of how they approach. But the layers of formality - maddening to off-worlders - help to prevent unwelcome interactions and keep the peace well. The Kessarine are a people with a long fuse but a hot temper at the end of that fuse. The dangers of the desert mean a Kessarine is rarely unarmed, and indeed feel naked without their knives, and offence is taken very seriously indeed.

Recent History:

Kessarine was in the path of Waaargh Skumrenda as it moved into the Erudani sector. While the Waaargh was broken at the northernmost tip of Erudani, Kessarine was essentially the front line for the entire conflict. To this day there are infestations and gatherings of Orks in the deep desert that must be regularly mopped up by Kessarine forces.

The Kessarine Military:

Kessarine being a planet that is people rich but edibles poor is always keen to raise regiments for the Imperial Guard. The sheer scale of Kessarine and the hostility of its terrain means that the most common form of these regiments are armoured ones. The Kessarine have taken to tank-riding as a concept for moving their infantry rapidly along with the columns of tanks. The infantry and armour cross-train and are closely integrated into a fluid whole, capable of dismounting from their armoured steeds in moments and forming battle lines to support the cavalry charge of the tanks. Ranges being typically long in Kessarine fights, the populace have taken marksmanship seriously and dedicated marksmen in each squad are given scoped rifles to make the most of this trait.

An Example Regiment: The Kessarine XIth Cavalry.
CO: Col Navin Ghoshal
2IC: Major Anguri Badakar
Commissar: Invictus Dravland
Regimental motto: "de harenae ad astra" (From The Sands To The Stars)
An armoured regiment comprising 3 companies of armoured fighting vehicles and 1 stiffening company of motor infantry led by the normal headquarters and administrative formation.
