Naya Khatuna

Naya Khatuna grew up on Diaphone as the daughter of Ankran migrants forcibly relocated when there was a workforce surplus on Ankrah and a shortage on the ocean planet. Her parents were assigned as labourers and apprentice sailors to the Benefactor, a giant ocean harvester-processor. Shifts were long and gruelling, leaving Naya’s parents with little time to raise their child; instead, she was left in the juve-pens, where her strange accent earned her plenty of teasing. She soon learned that thumping people stopped the teasing but got you in trouble with the adults. Eventually she realised it was easier to just lose the accent, much to her parents’ regret.

When Naya was entering her teens, the Benefactor was caught in a typhoon and thanks to years of bribes by the shipping company to skip expensive maintenance, the old vessel broke apart. Most of the crew, including Naya’s parents and almost everyone she knew, drowned during the night. Naya, semi-literate and heavily built, was sponsored by the shipping company to be sent off to the Progenium where it would be difficult to testify in the ensuing court case.

Naya threw herself headlong into the physical stresses of training as an escape from her anger at her circumstances. What she lacked in academic skill she more than made up for in the sparring chambers. It became increasingly clear where the Progenium would send her.

She had a few fling and semi-serious relationships during her time at the Scholam, but her anger and fatalism meant that people rarely stayed with her for long, and she didn’t have the looks to enjoy the pick of the litter. It frustrated her, but she would tell people that relationships only give you two things: grief, and a distraction from training.

She was expecting to be assigned to frontline duty, but as it turned out, there had been a request for new troopers to replace recent casualties on an Inquisition vessel called the Trojan. Naya didn’t care where she was sent as long as she’d see some action.

Upon arrival, three things became apparent. First, all the other stormtroopers were from [[Stohlbard, a place she’d never heard of. The perfectly normal Diaphonian accent she’d cultivated once again marked her as an outsider. Second, she was a stranger replacing good friends. Third, she was apparently the only woman. She hadn’t previously paid gender much thought, and the dragoons didn’t seem to care about that, but it felt strange all the same. She resolved to prove herself as quickly and spectacularly as possible; thus, when an agent called Kelemen requested a wingman two days after Naya’s arrival, she was the first to volunteer. The other dragoons, hardly in the mood to lose more friends, said nothing to stop her.
